Biblical Encouragement from a Christian Counselor | Lightfilledhome.com/blog

There used to be an odd stigma against seeking professional help from a counselor or therapist. I remember as a teen feeling embarrassed that I went to a counselor following the suicide of my dad when I was 14 years old. However, I believe I wouldn’t be near as confident or able to navigate through general life had I not learned valuable tools way back when.

It seems though, thankfully, that with the growing concern of teen and adult suicides and other mental disorders caused by addictions and other diseases, there seems to be a new sense of empowerment by seeking help.

As I mentioned earlier I saw a counselor throughout much of my adolescence, so now as an adult, I felt my heart and mind needed to gain professional help once again to work through a really hard personal relationship. I had been telling my husband for months that I felt like I needed to find someone to talk to professionally, and even though he always encouraged me to, I kept putting it on the back burner.

That was, however, until I had a sweet conversation with a friend and an outpouring of my heart. She gently suggested perhaps I might be interested in seeing someone. She gave me a name of a Christian counselor, and that same day I called for an appointment.

I knew I wanted to only see someone who could point me to Truth, not to anything worldly. The world can only offer temporary fixes that are surface level. God’s Word offers healing and redemption. I desired only the latter.

Dr. Lisa Burroughs is a gentle and kind godly woman who is well versed in scripture and Truth.

I have only had a chance to see Dr. Burroughs a couple of times before the pandemic of COVID-19 spread like wildfire all over the world until reaching our smaller but mighty area, but I reached out to her and asked if she had any encouragement to share from her incredibly long resume of knowledge and wisdom.

She, of course, responded back with scripture. đŸ™‚

From Dr. Burroughs:

“Some thoughts God has placed on my heart:

Acts 10:4– Prayer and compassion.

“Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord? he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.”

Phil 1:10–Understand what REALLY matters; even the General Secretary of the United Nations has called for a ceasefire around the globe because of this common invisible enemy

“so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ.”

John 21:22–God’s boundless love is available for and to all of us

“Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”

Psalm 139:23– Anxious thoughts

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”

Psalm 118:24– Seek joy today.

“This is the day that the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it!”

John 3:30– God is greater than this pandemic.

“He must become greater, I must become less.”

These are a FEW that are getting me through this unprecedented time!

God remains on His throne; He will NEVER leave us or forsake us (Deut 31:6); and since we, as Christians, know where we are going, whether we live or die (as Paul states). “

So grateful for Dr. Burrough’s biblical wisdom because that is where we find true peace and comfort during this time that is unraveling our local, national, and world-wide economies.

Here is a little bit about Dr. Burroughs:

Dr. Lisa Burroughs, Principal Counselor, earned her BA, MS, and Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, College Station, TX. Her Masters and Doctoral coursework included extensive hours in counseling, women’s studies, and gerontology. Dr. Burroughs is published in the latter two fields. She earned her Masters of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Austin, TX., with an emphasis in pastoral counseling.

{It is informative to note that Dr. Burroughs is a CERTIFIED Christian Counselor, which is of importance to those seeking dedicated CHRISTIAN counseling. There is a world of difference in a counselor who is a Christian and a CERTIFIED CHRISTIAN Counselor! It is Dr. Burroughs’ prayer that ALL counselors are Christian; however, a CERTIFIED Christian Counselor, as opposed to an individual who is a counselor and a practicing Christian, is much different in training, certification, and education!}

If you are local to the BCS area reach out to Dr. Burroughs if you are in need of Christian counseling in any capacity.

What scriptures have been helpful for you during this time?

The Bible is full of wisdom, encouragement, and practical ways to wade through these stormy waters of COVID-19. I pray you turn to His Word for Truth!

In Him, Tamara
