You may have noticed our Family Teaching Bible and Companion Guide and Tabs in our shop, but had no idea what it was. I am going to explain just what it is in hopes that you might like to use it in your home to build a tangible piece of your legacy.
I was having a rough time in the motherhood-land a while back, and was really struggling with behavior and obedience. Thankfully the church where our daughter was attending Mother’s Day Out was hosting a parenting seminar related to all things behavior.
I gained a lot of insight into behavior correction from a biblical standard, not just manipulating behavior for it to be a behavior that I deemed acceptable, but really behavior honoring to the Lord. The speaker had various books about parenting, but one thing that stood out was that all of her products focused primarily on negative behaviors and correcting them.
I wanted a resource that could teach and correct, but I also wanted to cultivate positive behaviors like gratitude and compassion, and create a space to celebrate those behaviors and attributes.
I also wanted a special Bible that could live on our dining room table that would be specifically for using as a teaching tool, with a way to find specific “teaching” scriptures quickly without having to google “scripture for ______” every time I needed one. I have a lot of scriptures memorized, but I wanted a quick resource to pull scriptures quickly without having to wrack my brain for the perfect one.
That’s where the Family Teaching Bible and Companion Guide with Tabs was born.
I found an amazing journaling Bible that I knew I could hand-paint to reflect our family’s personality that could be used in so many ways.
Each full page of scripture is accompanied by a full blank page that you can do with whatever you please. I have written prayers, recorded milestones, scripture memorization, and even drawn and doodled. My prayer is that as our daughter gets older (she just turned 4!), we can draw together and create art in it.
My goal for our Family Teaching Bible is that it will be part of our family legacy and daily rhythm, and will one day be gifted to her so she can continue to build upon the foundation of Christ that we prayerfully lay as her parents.
Along with our hand-painted Family Teaching Bibles, I also created a Companion Guide that has accompanying tabs!
The Companion Guide walks through several behaviors and attributes both positive that we want, as parents to cultivate in our children, and behaviors that we want to correct and encourage our children to turn from.
Each page of our guide has two different behaviors with multiple key verses related to each verse. There are multiple questions and statements you can use or memorize to gently correct or celebrate!
For the section on complaining and/or whining:
The key scriptures are Philippians 2:14-16, James 5:9, Ephesians 4:29, Jude 1:16, and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.
The questions and statements to encourage your child when discussing whining or complaining are:
“Did you know there is always something to be grateful for?”
“Right now you are complaining (or whining) about something you want or want to do, what is something you are grateful for?”
There are 15 positive behaviors and/or attributes within the Companion Guide, and 17 behavior corrections or negative emotions.
A couple of the negative emotions necessarily aren’t bad, but they are not from the Lord, and while we all deal with them like fear and anxiety, we want to guide our children to what God teaches about them.
Once you have gone through the Companion Guide, you will pick one scripture for each behavior that speaks to you for your family and parenting. Then you can find the corresponding tab and place within your Bible so you can easily and quickly reference it each time you need to!
We have a multi-colored set and a neutral set so that you can pick what falls in line with your family decor if you plan to leave it out like we do!
I hope this helps you understand what type of resource this can be for your family! My desire is to raise our daughter on a firm foundation of Christ’s love and grace, but is also anchored in Truth and godly and merciful discipline when necessary. I feel confident this will help us navigate through parenting over the years with biblical wisdom.
You can purchase our Family Teaching Bible as a bundle with a Bible and Companion Guide and Tabs, or you can simply purchase just the Guide and Tabs if you already have a Bible you’d like to use for the tabs!
Have questions? We’d love to answer any you may have!
In Him, Tamara
